The Chipper Chipmunk Friday Favorites- Orangetheory Fitness

Hey there, Chipper Chipmunk Tribe!  Can you believe we are already well into the second week of June AND summer is officially here?!  Is it just me or is 2017 on warp speed?  As you know, I’m always looking for new ways to improve health and fitness, so that I can share my learnings with all of you!  In an effort to achieve my healthiest summer body, I decided to spice up my workout routine with something you’d least expect…………………..an ORANGE.  Orangetheory Fitness that is!  In this edition of The Chipper Chipmunk Friday Favorites, I’m going to give you 10 PLUS reasons why you’ll LOVE this revolutionary, science-based, heart-rate interval group training, known as “Orangetheory“.orange squattingWhen I heard that there was an OTF opening up in my area, I jumped on their website to see what all of the hype was about.  Several of my friends and co-workers had been raving about this place and were seeing some serious results, so needless to say, I was stoked to hear that one was opening soon in my neck of the woods.  Here are some fun facts that I learned while perusing their website (orangetheoryfitness.com):

How is OTF different from other workouts and gym memberships?

1. HEART RATE BASED INTERVAL TRAINING

Backed by the science of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (or EPOC), Orangetheory’s heart rate monitored training is designed to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy. They call it the afterburn. Members burn an estimated 500 to 1,000 calories in 60 minutes.** And keep burning calories for up to 36 hours. *

The goal is to have your heart rate in the “orange zone” for at least 12 minutes or more within the 60 minute class (hence the name Orangetheory Fitness).  You wear a heart rate monitor around your chest, or you can wear a wrist monitor (which is what I opted for), and your stats are projected via bluetooth onto a large screen in front of the room.  This keeps you aware of exactly what zone you are in, how many calories you’re burning, and how many afterburn points (known as splat points) you’re accruing.

I had never used a heart rate monitor prior to starting Orangetheory, but WOW, is it a game-changer.  Before, I would do distance runs or jump on the stair climber or elliptical with a goal of burning a certain amount of calories.  Not knowing my heart rate, I thought I was “pushing myself”, but now I realize I most likely wasn’t in that target orange zone for the majority of my workouts.  OTF opened my eyes to a whole new workout experience, and I am already seeing results after just a few weeks.

2. COACH SUPPORT

At Orangetheory, you’ll get the energy of a group workout with the attention of an experienced personal coach. Their coaches are knowledgeable, encouraging and are committed to helping you meet your fitness goals.

Being a former athlete, I admittedly missed the grueling workout sessions our coaches would inflict upon us to help improve our team’s speed, endurance, stamina, mental toughness, strength and camaraderie.  At the time, of course, I hated the thought of “suicide drills”, and timed miles, but lookin’ back, I was in the best shape of my life.  The coaches at OTF aren’t militant or yell in your face types, but they are SUPER supportive and extremely helpful in my experience.  During my first couple of classes, I didn’t know the proper form of rowing or how to utilize the TRX bands, but my coach took the time to explain, while keeping the class on track with the current workout.  These coaches are serious multi-taskers, and are good at what they do!

3. WHAT DO YOU BURN FOR?

According to their website, if weight loss is your goal, you can expect to see an estimated loss of three to five pounds per week by attending three to five sessions per week and with proper nutritional planning. If performance is your goal, you can expect to see an increase in power, speed and strength after your first two weeks of attending two to four sessions per week.

After my free trial class, I was hooked.  This place was motivating, fun, and it pushed me to do exercises that I normally wouldn’t do on my own.  They even have an app that allows you to track your splat points and calorie burn outside of the gym.  Since I still had my Planet Fitness membership, I enrolled for the twice a week OTF package,  and was really just looking for that additional push to keep my body challenged and toning up.  As I said earlier, after just a few weeks, my clothes are fitting better and muscle definition is on the rise!  Woot Woot!

4. OUR STUDIOS

Top-of-the-line equipment, upbeat music and motivational trainers make the Orangetheory Fitness environment the most energetic fitness environment around. Their studios have 12 treadmills, 12 rowing machines, 12 suspension unit systems and plenty of free weights and benches for sessions of 10 to 25 people. Each studio has separate men’s and women’s restrooms and showers for convenience and comfort. Lockers, courteous staff, and modern equipment complete the OTF experience.

If you’re a music junky like me, you’ll be addicted to the workout soundtracks.  The music alone, makes you want to push harder, run faster, and lift heavier.  Honestly, sometimes I wish there was a mini dance break between treadmill and weight sessions.  Speaking of music, if you haven’t checked out the Chipper Chipmunk workout playlists on Spotify, click on this link
